Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for Genesis was released on February 2, 1994. In the actual game itself, the only playable characters are Sonic and Tails, alone or together. In the competition, you can race as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. This game also allows the player to save their game for later usage. You can save six different games in all.

STORY

Knuckles has been tricked by Robotnik into believing that Sonic and Tails are trying to steal the chaos emeralds. Knuckles spends the whole game making life miserable for Sonic and Tails by pressing a button and then laughing as Sonic and Tails are sent to another passage. While Knuckles keeps Sonic and Tails busy, Robotnik is stealing the chaos emeralds.

COMPETITION MODES

If a mode has two versions, there is an asterisk by it. One version has added obstacles like banana peels for you to avoid and things which help you like a sneaker that increases your character's speed. The other version doesn't have any of these added features and is exactly like the Time Attack.
*Grand Prix Mode: Play as your chosen character through all five zones against an oppenent
*Match Race: Play as your chosen character in one of the five zones that you choose
Time Attack: One player mode where you just race against the clock in the zone of your choice
