Considered the real "Sonic 3," this game was easily the longest Sonic game in terms of levels and ways to play it at its release. This locked-on game combines the levels from Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles as well as has the game save capabilities of Sonic 3. Not only can you play as Knuckles, Sonic, Tails, or Sonic & Tails, but this game also has the Super Emeralds that allow you to become Hyper Knuckles or Sonic, or Super Tails. You can also play the competition races from Sonic 3.

SONIC AND/OR TAILS' STORY

Knuckles thinks that they're trying to steal the chaos emeralds and makes life difficult by blocking their paths or sending them different places. When you beat Knuckles in the Hidden Palace, Knuckles will find out that Robotnik is the real bad guy and help you.

KNUCKLES' STORY

Someone's after the chaos emeralds, and it's up to Knuckles to stop them, using his special abilities and knowledge of the Floating Island. If you defeat Mecha Sonic without collecting all 7 chaos emeralds in the Special Stages, you won't get the Master Emerald and the Floating Island will end up floating on top the ocean. If you do have all 7 chaos emeralds, you'll be Super Knuckles and have the Master Emerald and the Floating Island will rise up above the clouds. Get the 7 super emeralds as well and you'll be Hyper Knuckles and the Floating Island will also rise.
