Best of Times, Worst of Times
By:SnowPuppy
One day, one sunny day, Kay-Si was reading a book, as usual, in the
living
room, when she heard a familiar bark.
"Okay, Sweetheart, I'll get your dinner." She said to the starving
poodle.
"Bark!" Exclaimed Sweetheart, looking up at Kay-Si happily.
Kay-Si layed down the dog dish, and Sweetheart began happily eating.
Kay-Si
also layed out a water dish for the excited poodle, for she knew
Sweetheart
would be thirsty too.
Then Kay-Si heard the phone ring. She went to go answer it.
She picked it up, and said, "Hello?"
"Hola!" Said a familiar voice.
"Susan?" Kay-Si asked.
"The one and only!" Exclaimed Susan happily.
"Why are you calling for?" Asked Kay-Si.
"I wanted to let you know I'm going on vacation, so I wont be over
there for
awhile." Susan told her cousin.
"Oh, okay!" Kay-Si said.
"Before I go, anything new?" Susan asked.
"As a matter of fact, yes. We got a dog, a poodle. Her name is
Sweetheart."
Kay-Si said to Susan.
"Oh, how lovely," Said Susan. "Too bad I dont get to see her."
"Yeah, well, see you when your vacation's over." Said Kay-Si.
"Okay! Oops, gotta run! Bye!" Said Susan, and Kay-Si heard the phone
click.
Kay-Si put down the phone, and then ran back into the kitchen where she
saw
an empty dog food dish and water bowl. She was surprised that
Sweetheart
could eat that fast. Then she heard a sound. It sounded very much like
thunder.
Oh no! It was a perfectly sunny day, and now it's going to rain! I sure
do
hope Steppenwolf and Moonwatcher make it back safely. Thought Kay-Si.
But as hours passed, no sign of them.
That's odd, thought Kay-Si, they're usually back by now.
Kay-Si decided to go out and see if they were okay. She got her sister
Nick-Ol to babysit while she was looking for her husband and son. She
ran out
of the house to find out the rain had gotten much worse. It was pouring
down
fiercly upon her. And it was, indeed, strange, because just a few
minutes ago
it had been perfectly sunny.
She walked and walked, and heard the sound of the damp grass below her
feet
everytime she walked on it. The rain seemed to be pouring more heavily
now.
She just hoped that Steppenwolf and Moonwatcher were both okay and not
hurt.
As she walked on, the chances of ever finding them became hopeless. But
then
she heard someone following her. At first she thought it could be
Steppenwolf, Moonwatcher, or both of them, but what if it wasn't?
"Who's th-there?" She stammered.
"It's Loren, ma'am. Officier Loren." Said Loren, coming out of the
darkness.
"Oh, Loren! It's been awhile since I've seen you." Said Kay-Si.
"Yeah, I know. Ever since Molly-Ca admitted she really didn't love your
son,
things haven't been going too well between our families." Explained
Loren.
"Yeah, I know," Said Kay-Si. "Hey, have you seen any sign of
Steppenwolf or
Moonwatcher? I've been looking for them everywhere!"
"Actually, that's what I've came to tell you about," Said Loren. "It's
not a
very pretty story, though. You see, a bolt of lightening struck the
island's
forest, way over there. And I think I saw your husband and son in there
earlier."
Then Kay-Si noticed her mistake. The one place she didn't look was the
island's forest!
"Oh no! What's going to happen to them?!" Kay-Si asked.
"We're trying our best to put out the fire, and then we'll check for
anybody
in need of help." Explained Loren.
"I'm going to go look!" Kay-Si said, running towards the island's
forest.
"No, you can't! It's too dangerous---!" Began Loren, but it was too
late.
Kay-Si had ran off, not bothering to listen to what Loren had to say.
All she
wanted was to save her husband and son!
She ran to the forest, and seen it up in orange flames. She gathered
her
courage, and raced into the forest.
It was very hot and smoky inside of the forest. Kay-Si crawled under
the
smoke and tryed not to get hit by firey branches.
She tryed her best to keep going on. And she hoped that both her
husband and
son were still alive. She couldn't bare it if either one of them were
dead,
or, what would hurt her even more, was if both of them were dead. She
hoped
they were both alive and alright.
She finally saw something. The smoke was making her vision blurry, so
it was
hard to tell if it was one of the people she was looking for. She
crawled
nearer, and saw that it was.
It was Moonwatcher, badly burnt and unconscious. Kay-Si looked around
but saw
no sign of Steppenwolf.
Kay-Si then heard a noise from behind her. She turned around and saw
that it
was only Loren.
"Loren! Whats with all these sneaking-up-from-behind-me approaches?"
Kay-Si
said, her voice a little shaky.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am," Said Loren. "Oh, I see you have found your son?"
"Yes, can you please help him?!" Kay-Si asked.
"I'll do all that I can." Answered Loren, carefully picking up the
badly
burnt Moonwatcher.
But, before Loren could say anything else, Kay-Si was off again. It
seemed
that she wouldn't give up until she found her husband, too.
Then something caught her eye. She looked again, and was very shocked
at what
she saw.
It was Steppenwolf! But he was in much worse condition than
Moonwatcher.
Kay-Si looked, and soon noticed that one of the tree's firey branches
had
fallen right on Steppenwolf. And he was much more burnt than
Moonwatcher.
Kay-Si just didn't know what to do! The situation seemed hopeless. But
she
didn't want to give up. She tryed her best to drag Steppenwolf out of
the
forest fire. She then layed him down outside on the cool grass, as far
away
from the forest as she could get.
Both Moonwatcher and Steppenwolf were then taken to the nearest
hospital. And
what made Kay-Si relieved was, that both of them had a pulse, and they
both
were slowly and gradually breathing.
And, in time, they both awoke, and they both had strong breathing. Soon
after, they got to go home. Kay-Si was relieved, very relieved, that
both her
husband, and their son, were alright.
When they walked into the living room, Kay-Si thanked her sister for
babysitting,(Sweetheart then looked up at Kay-Si) and dogsitting, of
course,
too.
Nick-Ol then left her sister's house, and headed home herself. Kay-Si
then
heard a bark from Sweetheart.
Sweetheart barked longingly and scratched her paw against the door.
"Okay, Sweetheart. We'll go to the park." Kay-Si agreed.
Sweetheart jumped for joy at the word "park". She had learned what that
word
meant a long time ago.
So they all went to the park, at Sweetheart's doggy suggestion. They
all had
a great time. Then Kay-Si spoke up.
"I know what the moral of this story is." She said.
"What?" Asked Moonwatcher curiously.
"Best of Times, Worst of Times," Kay-Si explained, "because when you
two got
burnt in that forest fire, that was the worst of times. But here, at
the
park, is the best of times, because we're having a great time!"
"Yeah, I guess that is kind-of the moral of this story." Steppenwolf
realized.
Before they went home, they noticed the newest member of their family
was
missing. Sweetheart was no were to be seen.
"Sweetheart! Sweetheart!" They called.
Finally, they saw Sweetheart running up to them.
"Sweetheart, where've you been?!" Kay-Si said.
"Well, nevermind that. She's found now. Lets go home." Said
Steppenwolf.
And then, they went home. It was getting late, and they didn't want to
be
outside in the dark. When they got home, they heard something strange.
"Ru---oof." Said Sweetheart weakly.
"Sweetheart? What's wrong?" Kay-Si asked, noticing the weakness in
Sweetheart's faint bark.
Sweetheart rolled over like she was in pain, and did more of her weak,
faint
barks. Everyone looked at the poodle concerningly.
"Oh, we've got to take her to the vet!" Kay-Si said.
"This is very strange," said Moonwatcher, "she was just fine a minute
ago."
"Well she's not now," Steppenwolf said. "And your mother's right. We've
got
to take Sweetheart to the vet. It's obvious that she's in a lot of
pain."
And so the poodle-in-pain was quickly rushed to the vet. They all hoped
that
their doggy friend would be alright. And they also hoped that the pain
she
was in was nothing fatal.
The vet checked out Sweetheart carefully. Finally, after much time, he
spoke.
"Well, there's some good news," he said, "it's nothing fatal."
"Hooray!" Shouted Dylan happily.
"So, whats wrong with her?" Kay-Si asked.
"Be prepared for what your about to hear." Answered the vet.
"Just tell us! What is it?" Kay-Si asked once more.
