Tails is flying Sonic's plane, while Sonic stands on the wings. They see "an island in the sky." As the fly over the island, suddenly a missle knocks their plane out the sky, but Tails starts flying and grabs Sonic's wrist. Sonic figures that Robotnik is behind this. Sonic and Tails start walking around the Floating Island when they're attacked by a batter blimp. They dive into the water, but that isn't much better, and they pass out. Sonic and Tails wake up to find themselves tied up. However, their tormentor isn't Robotnik. He is "Knuckles--Last of the Echidna."
Knuckles tells them that Robotnik told him that they are jewel thieves and that they're after his island's chaos emerald. Unknown to anyone, Robotnik is stealing the emerald at the present time. Meanwhile, Knuckles lets Sonic and Tails go, and tells them they have 10 minutes to get off the island, or else he's coming after them. Robotnik isn't happy that Knuckles let Sonic and Tails go, but he gets over it because Crabmeat brings him the chaos emerald.
Sonic and Tails decide to try and prove their innocence. Knuckles, who's following them, takes a short-cut and finds out that the emerald is gone. Sonic and Tails arrive to find Knuckles wants their help, because "Nobody...but nobody...plays Knuckles for a sap and gets away with it!"
Robotnik is getting ready to leave and is holding the emerald in his hands. Suddenly, a streak goes by and the emerald is out of his hands. Robotnik turns to see Sonic holding the emerald and Knuckles right beside him. Sonic and Knuckles take out the Swatbots while Robotnik starts the engines. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails get out, while Robotnik flies away. Knuckles had gotten the parts of Sonic and Tails' plane. Sonic quickly puts the plane together. Sonic and Tails take-off, while Knuckles waves and figures that he'll see them again.
