Sally orders Rotor and Antoine to initiate Operation Last Resort. Nicole informs Sally that Knothole was evacuated. Rotor gets the 'botmaker. While Sally starts speaking to defend her decision, Knuckles wakes up, but he's delirous and starts attacking Antoine, thinking he's Mecha-Sonic. After Knuckles punches Rotor, Sally kicks Knuckles in the back which snaps Knuckles back to reality. Sally and Knuckles talk about their times together, which wakes up Bunnie. Then, Sally tells Knuckles of the plan to roboticize him to fight Mecha-Sonic. Knuckles readily agrees and won't even listen to anything about risks.

Meanwhile, Mecha-Sonic is trashing Knothole and spots Tails. He hesitates to shoot Tails, and Robotnik gets angry and orders Mecha-Sonic to give him the coordinates of Knothole so that he could nuke Knothole. Before Mecha-Sonic can give the coordinates, Mecha-Knuckles appears and destroys Mecha-Sonic's communicator. The fight begins with the Freedom Fighters watching below. At first, Mecha-Knuckles is winning, but Mecha-Sonic punches Mecha-Knuckles so hard that Mecha-Knuckles is sent flying toward the nuclear missles of Robotropolis without anyway of stopping himself. Mecha-Knuckles creates a massive magnetic field which attracts Mecha-Sonic to him and they crash into the missles together. Nicole tells them the chances of Knuckles and Sonic surviving are slim, and this saddens mostly Sally and Tails.

In Robotropolis, Robotnik comes out from his underground shelter. In the rubble, he finds Mecha-Sonic, "badly damaged, but repairable." Then, tapping him from behind is Mecha-Knuckles, who can still move and function on his own. Mecha-Knuckles tells Robotnik that Sonic had to retain some of himself because Mecha-Sonic made sure to take the full brunt of the impact when they crashed into the missles. Mecha-Knuckles takes Mecha-Sonic from Robotnik and flies over to Knothole.

In Knothole, Sally gives Mecha-Knuckles a huge hug. Tails starts to deroboticize Knuckles while Sally tells Rotor and Nicole to find a way to save Sonic. Nicole discovers that Sonic has an aura where his personality still resides. Nicole retrieves Sonic's personality, which changes Mecha-Sonic back to Sonic the Hedgehog. Knuckles, also deroboticized, comes over. Sonic and Knuckles exchange words which makes Knuckles angry and Knuckles flies off. Sally tells Sonic, who doesn't remember anything, that Knuckles just "saved all our butts." Antoine then arrests Sonic for disobeying the council's order. Sally decides to follow the law instead of her heart and allows Antoine to put Sonic behind bars.

A blue hawk calling himself "Predator Hawk" knocks Charmy out of the sky, while an ape calling himself "Sgt. Simian" knocks out Mighty. An alarm goes off so Sgt. Simian tells someone via a wrist communicator to be cautious.

"At Point 'B,'" Vector considers the situation to be serious since Mighty and Charmy haven't come back yet as he talks to Espio. When Espio refuses to answer Vector figures it's because Espio is currently camouflaged. However, a lynx shouts that it won't work as he claims his "keen senses" allow him to pick up Espio's "scent" and "heartbeat." As Vector tells Espio to watch out, a frog kicks Vector from behind. The frog introduces himself as "Flying Frog" and the lynx as "Lightning Lynx" as the two Chaotix bump heads. Flying Frog uses his wrist communicator to inform Sgt. Simian that they took care of Espio and Vector.

The "invaders" get together and Sgt. Simian says that the Chaotix didn't know "lesson one" concerning the "element of surprise." At that moment, Mighty gets up and clocks him as Espio punches Lightning Lynx informing them that the second lesson is playing "possum." Mighty and Espio switch punching partners as they explain "lesson three" as not underestimating your "opponent's speed or strength." Charmy is carrying Vector, who returns the kick to Flying Frog and mentions "the value of teamwork" as the fourth lesson. Charmy punches Predator Hawk and says that "small things can pack a big punch" for lesson number five.

Now that the lessons are over on the Chaotix' end, Mighty asks them who are they and what are they after. Sgt. Simian says that they'll only give their "names, ranks and serial numbers." While someone in the shadows behind the Chaotix in the shadows hits them from behind with his cane while telling them to "always expect the unexpected" as the "most important lesson." He calls the others his "Fearsome Foursome" and calls himself, Mammoth Mogul, "the former ruler of Mobius and its future Lord and Master." Mogul says that he has lived for eons, but "after the birth of the Ancient Walkers" and "before most modern races." He claims a jewel that should have killed him gave him great power, which he used to rule all that he could see. However, the races evolved and overthrew him. He learned over time that the jewel was a chaos emerald, which he showed them on his cane. Mogul wants to take the Floating Island's chaos emerald and then take out Robotnik so that he can rule Mobius.

Espio starts off the sentence that Mogul "deserves to be worshipped" and Vector ends it by suggesting that they "give him the respect he deserves." The "respect" turns out to be a full fledged assault. Mogul uses his cane to summon a hover vehicle. Mogul and the Fearsome Foursome get in and fire some lasers at the Chaotix before leaving but with Mogul promising to return. The Chaotix don't care since they will be "waiting."
