In another zone, Knuckles, Sonic, and Tails find themselves on a floating rock, which tries to eat them. Tails, when trying to fly, finds out that the gravity is "wacko." Sonic does his "sonic spin," which ends the rocks appetite, but leaves Knuckles and Tails adrift. Then, Athair appears, but he doesn't say anything or move. Knuckles figures that "the ol' weirdo" wants them to come to him, so Sonic uses his "figure eight" in reverse. Sonic's momentum carries him toward Athair, while Knuckles and Tails grab on. A portal awaits the trio as they leave the zone.

Meanwhile, Mammoth Mogul has defeated and captured some of the Freedom Fighters, Chaotix, and other resistance. He has renamed himself Master Mogul (MM) and plans on using Knuckles, Sonic, and Tails as his "elite strike force." However, Sally, Archimedes, Deo, and the others that escaped are trying to plan a counterattack. The meeting is cut short because MM crashes the party and starts blasting everyone who wasn't previously captured. However, a portal opens up behind MM and out come Knuckles and Sonic, both wearing 50 power rings. At first MM was surprised, but then he easily regained control and sends a lethal dose of chaotic energy at the duo.

But things don't go as MM planned, instead of killing Sonic and Knuckles, MM gave the duo "enough power to herald the triumphant return of Super Sonic" (SS) and "Hyper Knuckles" (HK). SS and HK simultaneously punch MM and send him flying backward through several walls. MM sees Athair and blames Athair, but HK and SS arrive and continue to pound MM until his cane breaks. MM's cane had MM's chaos emerald, no cane, no powers, right? Wrong! MM's chest plate was cracked during SS and HK's pounding and revealed that's where MM's chaos emerald really is. To demonstrate his power, MM moves the Floating Island and then sends HK and SS flying backwards toward their free friends.

Before MM can do anything else, a cloaked figure comes and punches MM. MM retaliates by blasting the figure with his chaotic powers. However, just like Sonic and Knuckles, the figure absorbs the energy an isn't killed by it. The figure punches MM again, takes off the hood and calls himself, "Turbo Tails" (TT). MM informs everyone that Tails is the "Chosen One" and that Tails, along with Sonic and Knuckles, are going to be the greatest heroes of this era. MM starts gloating and knocks out HK and SS. TT uses the Chaos Syphon, which the Ancient Walkers gave him, on MM. MM has to concentrate his powers on TT, which frees the orginally captured Freedom Fighters, Chaotix, Stryker, and Remington. The resistance joins the fight.

Watching from Haven, Locke wonders when he and his father should intervene. MM is angry and decides to add the power of the two chaos emeralds on the Floating Island to him. He creates a tunnel to the Chaos Chamber and is followed by TT, HK, and SS. MM destroys the Chaos Syphon, but Locke and his father intervene by creating a chaotic explosion.

The next morning, Sonic informs us that his, Knuckles, and Tails' ultimate forms saved them. However, Knuckles believes more than that saved the day. An officer of the Echidna Security Agency comes to Knuckles with a wrapped object. Knuckles unwraps it and reveals the Sword of Acorns, which he gives to Sally and generates lots of cheers from the Freedom Fighters.

As the Freedom Fighters are about to leave, Knuckles and Sonic have a heart-to-heart talk. They agree that they have a lot in common, however Knuckles declines the offer to travel Mobius to put Robotnik's sub-bosses out of commission. Knuckles' reason is "the Floating Island has gone through some extreme changes," including the fact that Mammoth Mogul is trapped inside of a huge master chaos emerald made of 14 chaos emeralds. When Sonic reaches the Freedom Fighters' plane, Tails greets him. Sonic says that he's not jealous of Tails' future status, and asks Tails if he would like to go on some adventures since Knuckles said no.
