On the Floating Island, Sonic and Knuckles are fighting each other because Sonic is demanding that Knuckles give him the spare chaos emerald to save King Acorn's life. Tails breaks up the fight, but Knuckles still says that "no emerald's gonna leave this island and that's final!"

Sonic and Tails return to Knothole with the power rings that they took from Robotnik (Sonic Quest). Rotor and Uncle Chuck use all the energy the power rings had, but King Acorn's condition is unchanged. Uncle Chuck and Sally tell Sonic that they have a new plan to save King Acorn. A royal doctrine speak of the Crown of Acorns which is in the Hall of Limbo. They think the crown can restore King Acorn if they can find it. However, they need Sonic to use a power ring to try a find out where the Hall of Limbo is.

The next day, Sonic, Tails, and Sally are waiting near the Lake of Rings for Fly Fly Freddy, a spy in Robotropolis. They need to know if Robotnik learned the location of the Lake of Rings before they attempt to get a power ring. Suddenly, Sleuth Doggy Dog, another spy, appears. He tells them that Fly Fly Freddy's cover was almost blown, but he has the report. Sleuth accompanies the three Freedom Fighters to the Lake of Rings and then reveals that he's now working for Robotnik and Swatbots come and ambush them. A fight begins and then a roboticized Fly Fly Freddy nearly cuts down Sonic. Bunnie, who was on patrol, joins the fight. A ring comes out of the lake and Sally orders Sonic to get it because the King's life is more important than the battle. Unknown to Sonic, while he jumps to get the ring, Fly Fly Freddy is about to blast him. Tails notices but it too far away to intervene. However, Knuckles plows into Fly Fly Freddy before he can get his shot off. Sonic gets the ring and then destroys the rest of the bots. Knuckles, who is wearing a back-pack, takes out the chaos emerald that he brought to help out the Freedom Fighters save the King.

In Knothole, Uncle Chuck informs them that he called Knuckles in when Fly Fly Freddy never showed up for his orders and convinced Knuckles to bring the emerald. Rotor uses the emerald's energy but it only makes the King worse temporarily. Sonic uses the power ring to try and find the Hall of Limbo, but all he finds out is that the Sword of Acorns is magically connected to the crown and the sword will lead them to the crown. However, Sonic didn't learn where the sword is. Sally is on the verge of tears, and Knuckles vows that he'll find the sword for Sally because "you shouldn't have to lose your father twice. Once is enough for anyone."

Knuckles and Tails go to Downunda to find Athair because he has a link with the Ancient Walkers. They figure that the Ancient Walkers would be able to give them a clue where to go to find the sword. Knuckles and Athair meet for the first time and there's no family love between them. However, the Ancient Walkers tell Tails that a chaos emerald cannot help King Acorn because there's nothing in common between them. The Ancient Walkers then give Knuckles and Tails a riddle along with the faces of six people: "On a once lush world and its hunk of floating stone...there exists a sorcerer, wizard and alchemist who stand alone...a charlatan, enchantress and paladin with fairness and courage thou must face...with patience and fortitude a blade of steel thou may embrace!" Afterward, Knuckles tells Tails that he's going on this quest alone.
