Knuckles tells us that Dimitri took over Echidnaopolis and was taking steps to take over the rest of Mobius. Dimitri was demonstrating his power to Edmund and the chief magistrate and telling them how nothing can resist his power except his fortress. However, fire-ants eat through the tower's foundation and cause it to collapse. Everyone runs out, except Dimitri who is buried because he was so shocked to have been bested by fire-ants. The echidnas decided that their science caused this and renounced technology. The city was torn down and a guardian was appointed. Edmund became the first guardian. However, the echidnas didn't destroy all their technology. They gathered samples of their achievements and stored them in an underground city beneath the shadow of Mount Fate. That's when Knuckles realizes that Archimedes' headquarters is the underground city. That's where Knuckles heads as the story ends.
