Knuckles says generations passed since the creation of the Floating Island. Two brothers, Edmund and Dimitri, created a Chaos Syphon to gradually absorb the energies of the twelve chaos emeralds that hold the Floating Island afloat. The plan was to allow the Floating Island to drop slowly and rejoin the mainland. The chief magistrate rejected the plan. Dimitri became angry and stormed out. Edmund returned home to find the Chaos Syphon was gone and knew Dimitri was going to use it on the emeralds. When Edmund got to the Chaos Chamber, Dimitri had already started using the syphon. Suddenly, there was an explosion and Dimitri was gone along with eleven emeralds. The chief magistrate entered the chamber and then Dimitri reappears. He tells them that one emerald is sufficient to hold up the Floating Island because its power is infinite and that "the energies of eleven shattered chaos emeralds howl within me. Power enough to lay worlds to waste or refashion them in my own image!" Dimitri then created a tower that would be known as Mount Fate.
