Knuckles is walking when he realizes that he's in the shadow of Mount Fate. Then Knuckles begins to tell us the story of Mount Fate. Before there was a Floating Island, the echidna civilization was the most advanced on Mobius. A married scientist couple were gazing at the stars when they noticed a white comet was going to collide with Echidnaopolis, the echidnas' city. The wife came up with the idea to harness the power of chaos emeralds to raise the city in the sky before the comet hit. The echidnas embraced the plan and that's why there's a Floating Island. However, their salvation "would one day give birth to Mount Fate and the greatest menace of all!"
